  • VR reconstructions

In the dark room of a gallery, two people use VR headsets. Behind them, two computer screens show what they are seeing within the VR glasses: A VR reconstruction of the exhibition Film and Foto from 1929.

VR reconstructions of the International Art Exibition Dresden 1926, the Room for Constructivist by El Lissitzky, a section of the exhibition Film and Foto from 1929, and the Malereisaal [Room of Paintings] of documenta in 1955, commission with Jasper Meiners, 2018-22. Foto: Katja Illner.

In collaboration with the researchers Linda-J. Knop and Dr. Simon Großpietsch, we were responsible for the 3D-modeling, design and development of the following exhibitions in VR:

    Internationale Kunstausstellung Dresden 1926

An in-progress screenshot taken in the game engine Unity shows the virtual reconstruction of the gallery spaces in which the International Art Exhibition took place. It looks a bit like a doll house, as the outer walls are missing and minuature paintings fill the different rooms.

Raum für konstruktive Kunst, 1926 by El Lissitzky

This screenshot of the virtual reconstruction of El Lissitzky's room for constructivist art shows a kinetic sculpture by Naum Gabo titled Model for Rotating Fountain. Its triangular and round shapes resemble an abstract cat. Behind the sculpture, painting are installed on walls with modular moveable surfaces.

A view into the virtual reconstruction of the exhibition Film und Foto shows modular wall displays made from dark metal with a variety of photos installed atop. In the middle of the large room, there are black benches. Light falls into the space generously through windows in the ceiling. This screenshot shows the view into the opposite direction of the one before. From the left and right wall, displays made from dark metal reach into the room and create perpendicular structures on which photos are installed. On the back wall, a large nonserif font reads: 'Wohin geht die fotografische Entwicklung? – which translates into 'Where is photographic development headed?
